Viennale 2007 – Curtain up for great cinema
Tonight, on 19 October 2007, opened the VIENNALE, already the 45th Times held in Vienna. As the opening film of the 12-day film festival of the classics Klute by Alan J. Pakula is shown through the year 1971. Jane Fonda, which is seen in the lead role of call girl Bree, will be present at the opening. For the first time in the history of the festival will be shown at the beginning so that no current film. On 31 October 2007, the festival will end with the closing film Yellavon Christian Petzold, who with actress Nina Hoss, who was honored for her role with the Silver Bear at the Berlinale 2007, will also be present.
The main program, a selection of current, full-length feature films and documentaries, including this year some 120 new works. All of these are global and national level, several international premieres or world premieres, including Monkey Warfare by Reginald Harkema (Canada), El hombre robado by Matías Piñeiro (Argentina), Ma Wu Jia Zhao Ye (China), Balaou of Tocha Gonçalo (Portugal) The Last Lumberjacks by Yu Guangyi (China) and Thomas Harlan – Hiking splitter by Christoph Hübner (Germany ).
As in past years, is dedicated to the VIENNALE intensively the presentation of unknown filmmakers, discovering new talents and lays emphasis on a stubborn and independent cinema, the directors are, as Laura Dunn, Gonçalo Tocha, Matthew Porterfield, Tan Chui Mui, Khavn, Nicolas Prividera or John Gianvito.
, but also some big name directors are part of known the program will be shown at the more than 300 films: Todd Haynes with’m not there, with Paranoid Park, Gus Van Sant, Ang Lee with Lust, Caution, Paul Schrader, with The Walker, Joel and Ethan Coen with No Country for Old Men or with George A. Romero George A. Romero ‘s Diary of the Dead. This year’s Cannes, the Palme d’Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Daysdes Romanian director Cristian Mungiu and Anton Corbijn’s debut film Controlüber the Joy Division singer Ian Curtis can be seen at the festival.
The German Cinema, this year with many current movie productions represented at the festival. Rudolf Thome, for example, presented his new film, The Visible and the Invisible, Yella, Christian Petzold, Hans Weingarten shows Free Rainer – Dein Fernseher lies, by Robert Thalheim’s And Along Come Tourists can see and Hotel Very Welcome by Sonja Heiss.
VIENNALE Although the operation is not aligned on Star Festival, will appear yet many prominent and interesting personalities of world cinema in Vienna. In addition to the great American actress Jane Fonda, the guest of honor VIENNALE, among others, the cameraman and two-time Oscar winner Haskell Wexler expects further Sandrine Bonnaire, Guillaume Depardieu, Moritz Bleibtreu, Masahiro Kabayashi, Hal Hartley, Nicolas Klotz, Tom Kalin, Nicolas Philibert and Todd Haynes.
A retrospective of VIENNALE “The path of termites – Examples of an essay-film 1909-2004″ is dedicated this year to film essay. The extensive program of retrospective was curated by the French, in San Diego teaching filmmaker and theorist Jean-Pierre Gorin, contains its own work – together with some of Jean-Luc Godard – significant examples of this genre. Gorin has selected some 60 works from 20 different countries – classical masterpieces in film history as well as absolute (re-) discoveries, including film work of DW Griffith, Nanni Moretti, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean-Luc Godard and Orson Welles.
